PAPER

Cut, crumple, open, flap, elevate, soar, exaggerate, fly, bend, lift (Kind, 2014)

Paper can be manipulated and changed in so many ways. It can be cut, coloured, folded, shaped, bent, ripped, burned, wet, glued and much more. I felt that the material was not hard to work with. The paper moved with my body movements as it was easily following my lead. Flexibility of the paper carried a key role in this image. This particular paper with the design of a shoe printed on it inspired me to attempt to make a 3D piece of art. The way the paper reacted to my actions allowed me to cut, bend, crumple and elevate the material. This once again brings up the idea that the paper can be very versatile.

Choose, spread, rip, tear, break apart, scatter, combine, create, collect (Kind, 2014)

Combining together different papers to create something new is all part of the artistic process. Paper can be used to release stressful emotions by tearing it apart. This paper also made me feel the emotion of happiness. The bright colours that the paper has make me think of joyful events and happy places. Tearing and combining these simple pieces of paper created a whole new way to look at them. While working with the paper, some questions came to mind. I was wondering how they create coloured paper, and how the first person ever though to cut down a tree and make a piece of paper. Also, I wondered why most paper comes in the shape of a rectangle, so I figured by ripping the paper it would also change the shape. The questions flowing through my mind are what inspired me to come up with this idea.

Gather, roll, form, tape, wrap, bunch, full, fasten, one whole (Kind, 2014)

Each piece of paper has a story and has been on a whole journey that we cannot even imagine (Pacini-Ketchabaw, Kind & Kocher, 2017). Its amazing to think about where that piece of paper has been, who made it, who has held it before me, where has is traveled in this world. We read an article in class and it really opened my eyes to the journey that paper takes. The reading mentioned how a newspaper can go from someone's door step to a coffee shop then to someone's office and so on travelling everywhere in the hands of different people (Pacini-Ketchabaw, Kind & Kocher, 2017). From recycling the paper could have previously been a label and then an envelope and now a lined paper. The paper used in this art could be recycled and then turned into something else, merging together many different papers to create a new piece used for a new purpose.
